Scientists have made progress with DNA nanobots and as a first step have created one which follows a programmed path. Now this is a long way away from creating one that will seek out and destroy cancer cells or rebuild nerves but a very necessary first step. No pun intended.
Now I’ll be honest here and say I don’t fully understand how these DNA nanobots work. Give me something programmable and capable of being programmed by instructions every time. I’m always concented that these type can be mislead by a strand of errant proteins and go the wrong thing. However I’m happy to accept that they do what they do and are the most likely candidates to be working on my DNA to fix any issues than a mechanical electronic nanobot. As an added bonus as they are going to be programmed by DNA sequencing or something the chances are the programming will be kept to a minimum and thus follow the KISS principle. Something I fear will not happen to electronic nanobots due to ease of programming.
An area to keep your eye on.

I think the article in the Register was better – no stupid picture.
That being said we must remember this is government funded and as we all know it follows the government line and restrictions. At least the restrictions are not as stupid as those depicted in the start of ‘Assemblers of Infinity’ by Kevin J Anderson & Doug Beason, although there were a couple of the ‘grey goo’ comments in the paper.
It is a terrific first step but needs to be taken away from government control to be allowed to grow.
Bring back the idea of monetary prizes for the development of ideas as we had last century. We need to get away from nanny state.
I chose it because of the picture.
I do have concerns about government leading these programmes myself. The guvmint should do something about it. Oh wait…..
Another book I’ll have to find. How many more do you have in that database again?

Ivan’s got it in one, which is the whole point of my sole post today – it’s not the ideas which are the problem but the people funding them and for what reason.
