One of the issues that arise from have a government that wraps everyone in cotton wool and restricts what they can buy, what they can do and what they should think is that they stifle the natural innovation that everyone has. Because they can no longer get access to the tools or the materials they learn not to think about changing things. Progress stalls and our species progress is held back.
This article about a Russian boy who has invented a small electromagnetic gun shows how far we are slipping. He couldn’t have done this in the UK. It’s reserved for the experts only and they didn’t do it because there is only so much R&D money to go around and this government wants more surveillance and databases to keep track of its criminals, sorry citizens.
Now because it’s a gun many in the UK will have their hands to their mouths and eyes wide with fear because it can well kill. Shock horror. In Russia he will get a job and money from this. In the UK he would get a criminal record and some time IF he had survived the visit from Plod.
How many other areas are we stifling innovation? How many years will we lose in progress?
Calamity awaits us unless we can generate resources for our growing populations. Socialist governments always end in failure. Will one ending spell the end of our species?

I have noticed that a lot of the design and development of that type of gun has been undertaken in the old USSR so the boy is following the tradition. That doesn’t in any way detract from what he has managed to do – dare I say ‘education’.
The ‘fear’ of guns in the UK is something generated by the political class out of their fear that people might just get fed up with them and do something about it – plus the fact an unarmed public is easy to control.
There was a guy in the UK that has produced a series of e-books about making guns from readily available parts – he has been arrested by the the hit squad and jailed at least twice on the grounds what he has done ‘might’ help a terrorist, bullsh*t. It all boils down to control, control of the masses by the political elite.
That same control is what stifles innovation – if people think for themselves they will question what the government is doing and might just take things into their own hands. The nightmare of all politicians of socialist leanings!
Yes. Philip Luty. Incarcerated by the Stasi. I’ve a few of his books myself.
Socialism. Dragging everyone down into the mud for centuries.
Engineers over there are encouraged and have a high status in the community.
James,
As used to be the case here.
