Replicating Rapid Prototyper

Self Replicating Machines. Sounds like something from the future but some have been with us for a while.

The latest, an Open Source version, is the RepRap. I think I will build one when I get some spare pennies.

Although it is a long way away from a Star Trek type replicator I’m sure it would be useful in any mad scientists workshop and significantly cheaper than the others I’ve seen so far. I wonder what some bright spark will make with it? Need to keep my eye on the Open Source builds.

Now if only it could make ammunition. :)

So now I have a new one to build. I built the original model a year ago mostly from parts in my various junk boxes – even made the PCBs using home made equipment. The only parts I had to buy were the ‘printing’ head and a few ICs.

The biggest problem with making ammunition is getting the primers, but even that can be worked round – think starting pistol. The RepRap makes a fine line of cartridge cases and lead is not too difficult to get hold of or cast.

    Ivan,

I meant like a replicator. With this you will still have to assemble the casing etc.

    James,

    Not for a long time.

    Ivan,

Your home sounds like something I could spend weeks in just exploring.

    Lord T,

It would have to be on a fine and sunny few weeks as the garage would have to be unpacked into the plas outside. That doesn’t account for the book cases that take up space in every passage, nor the fact I have to use the top floor terrace to do any construction work.

    LOL. Don’t tempt me.
