Artificial hand attached successfully

Now here is a step forward in augmented limbs.    This article explains scientists have successfully connected an artificial hand to a human and as well as providing the same functions as a real hand it actually provides tactile feedback.    This means that the hand can pass touch sensations back to the person it is connected to.   No more crushing the glass while you drink, unless you want to of course.

As well as the obvious benefits this could give any amputee I wonder how long it will be before we see people actually opting for this augmentation for practical reasons.  After all the hand does not have to be replaced with a hand like we have.    It could have additional functions built in.  It could be tuned up to give augmented power for construction work or it could replace fingers with computer interfaces, the limit is our imagination and we can certainly innovate.     Of course artificial hands must just be a start.  Arms and legs must only be a short step away.    Wonder when we will see plug and play peripherals that are hands for general use, heavy duty hands for labour intensive work and hands that are weapons for military use.

I’m also wondering if we can reverse this.   Have real hands plugging into the interfaces so you can actually get your real hands back for, well the personal touch.    If so, I bet it will become commonplace to augment your body in this way with your real limbs in storage.   Think about it, broken or crushed limbs simply get replaced.  You put the limb on you need for that days activities and just get on with it.

The bionic man must only be around the corner.   I bet someone is already wired up as we speak.

Now remember this is a stepping stone to the future for us.    Repairable and upgradable makes their uses limitless.    Only limitation is power and we are working on that.  remembering as well that reduced flesh and blood flow means less organic matter to feed our power requirements that way will decrease and thus existing food will feed more.

Of course there are limits.   I don’t want one of my most important body parts replaced by a rampant rabbit any time soon no matter what the missus thinks.
