Well it seems like there are still some places in the US that actually still work towards Freedom. Here is a web tool that is designed to circumvent filters put in place by places like China and Iran. Luckily the public still dislike these places stance on Freedom so that projects like this are received well and supported by the public.
However I suspect that sooner than we think we will find that we actually want some of these tools to be made available to people in the West. Especially when our governments start clamping down on Free Speech themselves. Now that the first request for dissenters to be reported to a Western government has been made we can only wonder when and what the next one will be about. I’m surprised this hasn’t already happened in the UK as we are usually first in the West at trampling over rights. This program being written by our government means that they will be able to ensure that it works fine censoring the West but leaving Iran and China’s populations a way to bypass their governments rules. This system is a free service that allows overseas users to access virtually any site on the internet. Not people in the US though. You have to conform to US censorship.
I was impressed by the statement “We don’t make any political statement about what people visit.” It makes a good statement but is then tempered by “there would be modest filtering of pornography on the system”. So it’s OK to bypass the laws of country you live in and who’s laws you have to abide to but you must conform to what we want to censor. Typical American political thinking. How long will it be before other subjects are included?
Luckily there are many smart people out there that believe in the Constitution and are willing to work towards upholding it and pushing its goal of equality and freedom across the world. So we will soon have systems, including source code so we can check backdoors, that will allow us to communicate worldwide. Confident that totalitarian governments are not listening in.
