Via Devils Kitchen who loves it when MS screws up I find this chart on the upgrade path for Windows 7. (DK has Apple shares if you don’t already know)

Now looking at it I feel that MS has yet again shown its contempt for the users. Why oh why can’t they provide an upgrade path for every user who buys an upgrade license? The version that most people have, XP, has no upgrade path. It’s almost as if MS are actually getting their revenge for us not upgrading to Vista by making us go the long way through an upgrade. You would think with the competition from Google and Apple that they would spend a few extra man years and make sure people could upgrade to any version from any version from at least XP. It can’t be rocket science. Have they never heard of backward compatible? It doesn’t seem to be a word in MSs vocabulary.
I understand from reviews and what I have seen so far that W7 is really good but it will be a while before I find out because I actually don’t want the hassle involved to upgrade. Saving all my files and my application settings then installing W7 and then all my applications sounds too much hassle for me. I could live with a backup followed by an install but not a complete wipe and rebuild thank you very much. I’ll wait until I buy a new computer where I have to reinstall all my applications. I’m about due an upgrade and may treat myself for Xmas. W7 not being high on my list for some reason as XP does everything I want.
In the meantime I’ll stick with XP. Still going strong. IMO the best Windows yet. Maybe that was MSs mistake. They made too good an OS and nobody wants to move. Can we have W8 developed by the same team as XP? Maybe they can supply us with an upgrade path as well.
MicroSoft buck up your ideas. What they have done since Billy Gates left makes me remember what happened to GEC when Lord Weinstock left. Could it be MS’s time is over already and I was expecting a bit of a fight with Google before we had a clear winner.
MS miss another opportunity
