With a whimper

I sometimes wonder with everything that we are doing, developing chemical and biological weapons, refining existing diseases to make them more efficient killers and the way we seem to justify using these against other people whether this would be the way the human race ended. Hung by our own petard.  Would one of these biological weapons get out of control and reduce the human species to a fraction of what it is. Of course, being some of the few who will be protected our politicians will live but what a life. Who will they be able to boss around? Who will provide them with the food and services they need if most of us are gone?

But, what if it is a new disease, one that we do not have a cure for or can find a cure for? One that reduces the human species to a fraction of what it is. Either way we will end up back where we will have to fend for ourselves again. One where we will likely be looking at subsistence farming and basic keeping of livestock to live. Lifespans will reduce due to lack of medical care and it will be like living in the late 1800s. It could be one from outer space, or evolving somewhere on our planet, either in a viral bath like bird flu does or eons old just awaiting discovery.

Personally, I think both of these are unlikely to cause a catastrophic pandemic.   Sure a lot will die but in the scheme of things it will be insignificant.  Media makes it much more than it is with Swine Flu seemingly over the peak now and winding down.  Media and government making more of it than it is.

So could it be an old disease, one we don’t have a cure for and will our current lifestyles we seem to suffer from more and more. Something as simple as allergies. We now that people have nut allergies and they can be fatal. We have warnings on packets of nuts to tell us the ‘may’ contain nuts that indicate how serious it is but at the same time there are many people out there with allergies that range from dust, where they need to be kept in little plastic suits or die to animal fur which causes breathing difficulties. There is even one where the victims can’t be touched by anyone. Our current lifestyle seems to encourage these allergies and not that science allows us to make sure they are kept safe to have children the Darwinian option that causes those traits to die out is bypassed. Thus making more of our children susceptible to allergies.

I suspect that something in our genes that remains dormant for most of us and is just waiting for a trigger will be the most danger.   Reading this article on allergies shows how much we don’t understand about a very common genetic issue that could come back and cost us dearly.  I wonder exactly howmany of us have allegies we don’tnow about?  How many to some chemical that we may end up with in GM food or in an untested Swine Flu jab?

It seems a very simple and easy way for us to go.  Not with a bang but with a whimper.  A weak whimper at that.
