It seems that Google has introduced a new tool in it’s quest for galactic dominance. Starting with the earth first of course.
This tool is called Wave and is described as ‘what email would look like if it were invented today.’ Strong words. Remembering of course that EMail is more a standard than a product. There are many EMail programs out there and they all interact at a basic level. They all have the capability of sending text and attachments to each other and they all handle them in almost the same way.
Of course since we can’t just leave things alone, the companies need to provide upgrades to get their next influx of cash, EMail programs now do a lot more than that and in the extra functionality they suddenly find that they start to find incompatibilities. The reason? EMail is meant to be simple text and the standards don’t go beyond that. And surprise surprise Wave is no different as it comprises EMail, IM, Web Chat and Project management software. Clearly aiming for the corporate market with the PM software and what is Web Chat? Isn’t that just IM in a different box.
Anyway, I want someone to write a breakthrough in EMail software. It has to read the text messages sent to me and allow attachments as well as having a filing cabinet but I don’t want it running programs on it’s own, I don’t want it downloading pictures across the web. Pretty much similar to one of the first EMail programs and one that will inconvenience hackers and spammers because they won’t be able to autorun their stuff or even know if the EMail address is active.
It’s the added facilities in all these EMail programs, particularly MS Outlook, which allows these programs and spammers such an easy time.
It’s unlikely of course that we will ever get back to basics because whoever does won’t get money for upgrades so interest will be limited. Maybe someone from the Open Software area?
