More paranoia

It seems that after global warming and global cooling, swine flu and … well just about everything else it seems that we still have room for some more technology issues.

Scientists predict mobile phone viruses will pose a serious threat. Read here.

This time though I think they are right and it’s already happening.    The problem is that most modern phones now are more like computers with phone capability than phones.  Once they added smart capabilities and allowed them to be programmed then they allowed some really neat tricks to take place and like everything else on the planet changes are not all good.   As an example, when you run that super new application you just downloaded to calculate your expenses and you have the MP option (No checking) switched on it then sends your data directly to the Telegraph.   Isn’t technology wonderful.

So the best way to make sure that you don’t really have a problem is to have a PDA instead and a much less sophisticated phone.   One that can only make phone calls and store phone numbers.  OK.  I now it’s two devices instead of one but it makes it much less likely that you will suffer to;
a) lose all your data
b) have your data stolen
c) have you calls intercepted
d) be tracked wherever you go
e) be used as a zombie

Yet again the KISS principle makes good sense.

Medicine availability

Yet again it seems our government has discovered that prohibition does not work.   Again it’s drugs but not to happy get high kind it’s medicines this time.   Seems that the blackmarket is supplying inferior products and this is leading to deaths.  What a shocker.

In the UK many drugs are kept behind the counter and only available on a prescription from your doctor.   Now if you want to get some to put in your survival kit for the future or a trip you are planning then you need to have a very nice understanding doctor.    Most people don’t have a doctor to prescribe drugs that they don’t need but want to keep for an emergency.

So many people turned to vet supplies for the standard stuff.   It’s pretty similar but not perfect.   Then that was clamped down on.  Can’t have the plebs looking after themselves without the state.

So people started ordering drugs from the US, a (currently) free country, or from other countries in Europe with less restrictions than ours over the web.    Like everything else it’s hit or miss and will get worse as the KGB monitor our mail for such subversive stuff.

Now if you think about this a bit you realise that this restriction only hits those that want to be prepared for the future and know that our government will not be there when we need us.    If you need medicines now the doctors will prescribe them.   If you want the drugs for recreational use or as precursors to other drugs your local dealer will have it in stock but if you want non recreational drugs such as powerful antibiotics or painkillers for a national disaster you are out of luck.

Now why is that?

Software defects

Anyone that works in the software industry knows that it is impossible to guarantee that any complex piece of code is error free.   This latest edict from the EU will certainly be one to watch as, if approved, it will have a disastrous effect on software development in the EU and lack of availability of the latest software from the rest of the world.

Of course there are cases where it is not so complex and sheer incompetence screws up the application.

Regardless if it is incompetence or merely complexity that causes the issues software is only as good as the team that makes it.  That comprises designers, who design the applications and specify the requirements, coders who code it up to meet the specifications and testers who test the applications against the specifications as well as extended tests for unexpected inputs etc.    The team makes the product and the team makes sure it is OK.

So for people to demand access to the code to ensure it works as expected is a bit ridiculous.   No one can look at a bit of complex code and tell if it works as expected.    If they could then every bit of code would work 100% every time.    They want to look at the code to ensure that back doors or malicious code has not been inserted and if the code is complex enough, like Windows or Office, even then you could not tell because the person who inserted the code could very easily have hidden it or even not included the relevant code.  Unless you recompile the entire application including libraries you just can’t tell.   However, in the case of simple, relatively speaking, software like voting systems and alcohol testing they are not complex enough to hide significant bits of code.    The case above is either bad design or bad coding which was not tested right.

Teams of testers test code every day and when it gets to the users bugs are still found.    fact of life in the software development area.    You can reduce the bugs by increasing the testers and checkers but it is unlikely you will remove every one.   You see software geeks can’t think like the average non software idiot.

Because of this reliance on software systems to determine anything critical should not be left in a computers hands.    Sure, it will calculate the best dose to treat a patient but you don’t want it making that calculation and then going off on it’s own to do so.   They just ain’t that reliable yet.

It’s not unknown for people even now to treat a patient with what a computer says on prescriptions now.  After all they are always right and discovered the dose is 100 times the maximum dose or something.  We think they are infallible.  It’s usually an input error by a human.

Soon though we will have systems that will be doing these calculations and dosing patients. By then we will have redundant systems doing the calculations and comparing results.   Written by two different teams.  Stopping if there is an difference and being fact checked for dosages by a separate program written by a third team.    All tested extensively on test subjects before going into a real environment and being tested but not treating the patient until everyone is happy.    Of course there will still be errors with extreme cases but that happens with real doctors as well.

Bottom line no complex bit of code can be guaranteed 100%.  No matter how much time and money is spent to examine and test it.    To assume you can do so and make people liable is sure to lead to people just not releasing their code in the EU.    It would be interesting if US hospitals were full of little robots examining and treating patients for diseases we have just learnt how to cure and we are stuck with what we have now because of politicians.   Bear in mind that is just medical applications we have many other areas where computers can be in control like traffic management who won’t want to be liable in the unlikely, but possible, event of a car crash.

Is this expected to help reduce accidental deaths?     Personally I think it’s a catch all law that will have some parents suing because their dumb ass kid can’t get past level 11 and it made him feel incompentant and the other kids laughed at him.  Poor diddums.

Modern Politics

As you have probably gathered I’m not really a great fan of politicians. Maybe in the olden days they were there to improve their country but now all they seem to want to do is feather their own nests and keep doing so by courting voters by giving them someone elses money in the sham of democracy.   To be honest today there is very little differences between the parties and they are all looking for greater control of our lives and thus more of our money.    For the state to take 50% of our hard earned money to simply waste on their pet projects is a disgrace.

I have very simple views of politics and politicians and put them into broad categories.

Socialists, Communists, BNP, etc. being the worst of the bunch looking at making everyone the same, except for those at the top of course.   Controlling, regulating and taxing everything you do and destroying any joy in life.   Every time they try their phisophopy it fails miserably.  The UK is just the latest example and the US has this to come.   It has amazed me that the US watched what Blair did to our country and then voted in their own used car salesman con man.  The mind boggles.  Socialism has been tried and tested several times and every time it failed miserably.

Conservatives, or Socialist light, simply want a smaller state but still want to control and regulate everything you do so can’t actually have one.   In the olden days, All hail the great Maggie, they actually stood for something but under Cameron, Blair light, they are no different from the Socialists as far as I can see.

Liberals though are my favourites of the bunch.    They have perverted the name Liberal as being whingey and whiney they destroy any joy in the world and do not want us to progress at all. In fact they would have us die by the millions to fit their perverted ideals.   They are a cancer on humanity and like a cancer are destroying us slowly and surely.   They don’t have any long term plans for society like the Socialists just simple policies to make each other feel good.    My favourite comment about these guys is that they live somewhere like California, whinge and whine about every cause, criminal rights, gun rights, gay marriage, abortion etc. they get their way and society changes to reflect those choices.   Unwanted kids, criminals running riot, high taxes, etc.  So they leave California for somewhere free (lucky them) and when they get there they say ‘This is great, much better than California.   Now, If only we had a bit more gun control…’    Slowly but surely they take over.

Then we have the Libertarians.   They actually stand for what most people want.   A small state with low taxes and little interference in your life.   You are free to do what you want as long as it doesn’t impact on others.    An American Libertarian said it all in a post last year.   Sadly I can’t find it now but it basically said you can do what you want and if your neighbour is doing something you disagree with tough luck.   Of course that is why they don’t do to well in elections. People want people to nanny others, just not them.  I see this being a big problem for them, and us.

So the current situation is we have a, small, group of people each with their own unique policies and several shared policies get together and run the country.  Our requirements being secondary to theirs.   So if each party thinks we should have gun control as a shared policy then there really is no other option for us and by their logic voting for them means we agree with every one of their policies.   We are ruled by party politics.

What we really need is for democracy to be brought up to date.    A way for us to avoid party politics and enable us to vote on each and every policy proposed.    After of course the blanket removal of thousands of useless legislations, simplification of the tax system and major work on our road systems and public services infrastructure.

Personally, I see only one party that would allow this system to be set up, the Libertarian Party, although how they are going to go about .   The biggest problem in my view is how do we get from the train wreck that is here to something stable which will allow it is beyond me.  There is just so much to do and many will not like it.

Although I do think a temporary dictatorship with me in charge to tear apart the whole system would be the best way.  I wouldn’t be up for re-election so I would be able to make the big decisions and then I could retire on the PM pension leaving a real system in place.  Just a thought.

Women have always been sex objects

The discovery of a 35,000 year old ivory figure has staggered anthropologists as it shows that even this long ago, our brains and their ability to think in abstract ways were probably as sophisticated as they are now.  Read here.   I’m not sure why it staggered anthropologists myself.

ivoryfigurine

I note that even after all these years we have not changed much in how we view women.   Just breasts and genitalia.  No head or anything else really, that’s just an add on.  It seems women have always been sex objects to us.  Ooops.   It’s just confirmation that the PC crowd are trying to reprogramme over 35,000 (at least) years of genetic programming by legislation.

Strange how the figure is so large as well.   I was always under the impression that it was only over the last few years people have put on a lot of weight.   Could that be a misconception I have recently picked up?   After all Raquel Welch was not exactly tubby in 1 million years BC.  This figure is certainly on the larger side.

Funny though that  it looks just like one of my ex’s.  (although she clearly had a head… I think)

Scanning for alien life.

It seems that we have the technology to scan all these planets that orbit distant stars for CO2.   Apparently, unlike the Earth which is different for some reason, producing CO2 is a good sign and shows life exists.

We will just have to hope that it’s not the remnants of the output of alien SUVs and that there is life there.

Now my question is that once we have detected this life sign what do we do?    What will it mean for religion?  Bearing in mind that the nearest star is over 4 light years away it means it’s a long way to go we certainly couldn’t send a probe in our life times with current technology.   So even if it is the start of a new civilisation one or both of us could be extinct before we could ever meet.  Bummer or it may be a good thing.   Very few of the films I have seen have anything alien that does not kick our butts.

Personally, I’m hoping that it would kick off research into interstellar drives although knowing our leaders it’ll probably be new weapons.

Wouldn’t it be funny though if we were the only air breathers in the galaxy and we think there is no life because we can’t find the traces and in the meantime there is a massive civilisation out there based on sulphur or something we can’t detect and they look over here and say no life there because they are looking for sulphur.

Is there a God?

I don’t know.

Mmmm. My shortest post ever. Perhaps I had better explain.

James and I were discussing if there was a God or not. A God as defined in the Christian texts.  James believes there is and I do not. James believes that he has proven it in a series of blog posts on his site and thus we had the following conversation which James posted in his sidebar as a sign that I’m not really interested in any real discussion.

A friend of mine started to argue that God did not exist.
“Which part of the articles did you disagree with then?” I asked.
“Well, I didn’t actually read them, they were so long. ”
“Ah, I see, then how can you say He doesn’t exist?”
“Well, it’s not logical, is it? I’m going to do my posts soon on why He doesn’t exist.”
“I see. And that’s logic, is it?”

Bit conceited to believe that his six posts would be the definitive proof of the existence of God when there are so many thousands of books on the subject but after that I was forced to read the six long posts on ‘[christianity] is fair discussion possible‘ anyway and as expected it was the usual bits of hearsay and facts with conclusions bent to a bias. He has forced me to give him some extra hits and waste a chunk of my life. Some people are really into stat porn, that must be some sort of sin. To be fair in James usual style he has well researched this and pulls many things together into these six posts.  I was intending to fisk it but I think it would take me years to do so.  The typing alone would kill me and I suspect this is a way to get you to concede.   I’m not a debater really but in answer to his post titles I do believe that a fair discussion is possible but what I think he means is that how can he convince heathen unbelievers with no facts.  A discussion is possible but in this situation we all still walk away with our own conclusions because there are still no new facts and who has the time or the will to discuss these things anyway.  It’s been done a million times before.  You believe or you don’t and I don’t.

I look at things logically and scientifically. I want evidence, repeatable proof and to see things for myself if possible. Evidence being something you can weigh in your hands and not some text from two thousand years ago the origin of which is uncertain. I am open to views that I do not understand by don’t want them to just be the answer without any reason. Occams Razor applies but is not always the definitive answer. Nature is a wonderful thing and full of surprises.

All the facts for God are hearsay from when people didn’t have the level of technology we have now. When people could only be struck down by spear, swords or arrows and dead was dead. No CPR or people in trance like states. In short anything unexplained would be attributed to something supernatural sometimes years after the fact and recorded as fact as if recorded that day. Embellished and modified to suit the writer’s bias and bits added to fill any gaps. Today many biblical events are recognised as not factual but symbolic although stated as fact even though we are not 100% sure when the accounts were written, by whom and if they have been modified in the hundreds of years since. We know that texts have been destroyed and texts modified by the church and others in power since records have been kept. None of that is recognised, not even in James posts on the subject, it is still just hearsay and conjecture supported by statements that if you do not think of these alternatives then you are deliberately ignoring options. We are simply expected to take them as fact just because they are from so long ago and make references to historical events that we know happened. Basically it seems we have someone claiming to be the son of God and has a cult of supporters who confirm he made predictions that came true and performed some miracles. Even if he did make predictions and perform miracles does that prove God exists? Miracles could be ‘magic’ tricks that fooled those in the olden days. Imagine David Blain back in time and it does not make a massive leap of faith to accept some people predicting the future especially ones involving humanity and how we react to things especially when recorded after the event itself.

I think that the reason people take the leap to a God is back to one of my original posts on how people think. They take facts and when they don’t define a unmistakable and firm conclusion they then take their own biases which they brought to the table with them and then extrapolate until they state that as fact. They jump to ‘God did it’ or as some people say ‘The Flying Spaghetti Monster did it’ because there is no other conclusion to make.

Back in the times of Jesus life was bad. Along came someone who thought life would be better if we all treated each other with certain rules and he spread this word and was seen as a messiah. Today he would have been a charismatic cult leader just like all the others. Back then he was preaching something to make people lives better and giving them something beyond death. It caught on because people were scared of death especially when they added on the promise of Hell as an encouragement. As the rules were generally good ones then it was supported and our whole society took off and flourished whilst the rest of the world went its own way.

After Jesus’ death his followers had a discussion ‘Bugger, I’m out of a job. Those politicians have really screwed us up again. Why do we keep going with the same lot?’ ‘Dole is crap what can we do?’ ‘Well we could keep it up and just carry on’ ‘I like that.’ said Mary. ‘All these non believers keep saying I was shagging Ringo behind Josephs back when he got me pissed’ ‘What about the pesky fact of Jesus being dead and all’ says Thomas. ‘Mmmm. How about when we said he was immortal we meant something invisible like a soul’ ‘We could keep it up and support him in the afterlife then.’ ‘Cool. We had better modify the books a bit then and make them a bit more cryptic like those pesky lawyers do to keep themselves employed.’ ‘Great. We are all agreed then. Meeting adjourned. .John you are the best writer type up the minutes will you.’ (Texts destroyed by the church after discovery) And thus the longest marketing brand in history was created. It continued and to our benefit may I add.

Later on after the whiteys didn’t apologise for anything in history that white people had done another charismatic cult leader made up his own cult and wrote his own book using characters from the previous, now out of copyright stories of Jesus, Mohammed had a great time and although he wasn’t as much of a talker he was hell with a sword and that gets more respect than a good talker any day. So another brand was born. Cults of this size are called religions.

So in the two thousand years since Jesus people have looked at the facts and thought ‘This can’t be right’ but still wanting something after death have come up with their own solutions based on the philosophical thoughts of the brightest. Thus we have other religions all looking to fill the facts gap with explanations.

Nowadays we don’t really follow the rules at all with being unfaithful and coveting that tasty birds ass but we still have that need for God to give us something after death. We still fear the coming darkness. So we call ourselves religious but we are not. We still fear taking that step because we are not certain and our God is vengeful. We would not be willing to die for our God like the Muslims would.

But none of this is proof of God.

My personal big issue is that put simply the facts are;
We exist. Something out there created the environment that lead to us. We can work our way back to the big bang with facts and theories but what about before then? Where did this thimble full of matter come from and what caused it to explode?

If we assume that God exists then what created God then? Does he really love us anyway? After all we have done as a species, slavery and mass murder. Why didn’t he build some safeguards? Why has he not stepped in and fixed the issues in our nature? This is the main reason why my leaps of faith don’t come to the conclusion of a God. I don’t believe anyone who cares in the slightest would allow this state of affairs to continue unchecked. I know people that care so much for others that they screw their own lives up to protect them. Remember that millions of people are born into a situation where they have no control over their lives. Life is harsh and free will, although still there, is to all intents and purposes non existent. When they die after a harsh life of being harsh themselves just to live and help their children live they are judged and allocated to heaven or hell based on how they lived. That is not right nor just.

I just can’t believe in a God that allowed all this to happen and didn’t do a thing about it yet claimed he loved us as his children. All children need guidance yet besides a few rules, good ones mainly I admit, nothing has been forthcoming for 2000 years. Talk about an absent father.

If there is a deity out there then I see him more like a scientist and our solar system our Petri dish. Kept away from other experiments and just left to grow and develop. Perhaps if we even develop interstellar travel he will come back and wipe us out as an out of control experiment so we don’t contaminate the other systems.

So I don’t believe in a God and am I not interested in converting James or anyone else to my beliefs. I can’t support them with facts.   So let them believe in their deities if it keeps them happy and gives them a straw to hang on to as we get older.

They may even be right. I just don’t know.

Technology isn’t always best

In the past I’ve said that technology is a double edged sword and not always the best way to go.   Tried and tested old ways are sometimes better.  Here is a case in point.

Woman Dies After Using Jackhammer As Dildo.

Ouch.

No one should be above the law

It has been interesting watching the expenses scandal take up so much of the MPs, media and bloggers time over the last few days.    The saying one law for us and one for them has never been truer. Yet there are more revelations to come.  The Telegraph is milking it’s scoop for what it can get and good luck to it.   Plus anything that stops this lot making new laws is a benefit in itself.

The Speaker of the House has called in the Police which reminds me of a sketch on the World’s Dumbest Criminals where the drug dealers call the cops to say someone stole their stash.

It has quickly become apparent that no one has the slightest shame in this. No one is going to resign and no one is going to get sacked.     Well, no one but the person who leaked the expenses anyway.  Their first thoughts on this is to claim that all expenses are within the rules, yet we have many, Cameron for one, repaying expenses so clearly now it is in the open they are not so clear.

The chutzpah it must take to propose that the solution to this problem is to hide their expense claims and simply carry on as if nothing has happened.

It is even more of a jaw dropper to read that Cameron is appalled and at the same time he has has his hand in the till as well.   But, no harm done, he has paid his back now.  Whoopie DooDah.   I can see Basher Smith claiming after his bank raid that he has repaid all the money stolen so they should let him off.

The only way this lot can possibly look like they are reforming the system is for everyone to be investigated independently, just like these guys caught fiddling their expenses, and if a case is made that they broke the rules prosecuted.   They can be tried and make their cases there for mistakes etc. just like the rest of us.   Paying back of course only makes a difference in sentencing.   Then all expense claims to be made public from here on in and subject to the same rules as the rest of us.    If they are not flexible enough then they need to relax the rules for all.  Many people have to travel to other areas and stay a few days for their jobs they don’t have the same benefits.   Everyone with their fingers in the till should resign and trigger an election.   Let the people decide if they believe their excuses or not.

Now the bit I found interesting is that most of us when caught react in certain ways.   Shame usually, it can make us come out fighting or make us go into hiding depending on what evidence there is.   The evidence in some of these cases is clear, expenses fraud.    There are laws and procedures in place to deal with them.   I would expect some to come out fighting and hope that the system doesn’t have enough evidence, others to throw their hands up and admit mistakes and others to admit their guilt.

To a man, and woman, they all came out fighting.   Why is that?     Well, I suspect it is that they know absolutely nothing is going to happen to them.  They will get away with this crime, as they have gotten away with others in the past.    The law just does not apply to them and they know it.

As mentioned on a US blog Mostly Cajun but it applies here too.

That’s where we’re at. Laws apply to us in the middle. Those at the top are too big, powerful or important to have to live by them, and those at the ‘bottom’ don’t either. And darned if I’m not getting more than a little dissatisfied by the deal.
