Private vs Public

Well looks like Gordo’s way of making the UK a powerhouse of science is not the way to do it.   Read here.

Only thing is that with Space Exploration who else is in the position to do it?    Private is OK for Space Hotels and things like that where profit can be made by providing paid for services to rich people, at the moment anyway.  However, is the Private sector interested in the gravity information, like Goce, on Earth.

Mmmm. Now I think about it.  Who besides pure scientists are?  I’m more for other things myself.  Now the question is which ones would lead to profit further down the line, mapping earths magnetic field or building space habitats?

So the questions are.  How much research should the government fund and what type?     Should all governments join together and do join research that benefits all?   I’m sure that many smaller governments who could not afford a full program, some backwards Marxist place like, Err, the UK, would be interested in pooling resources for a share of the knowledge and decision making on strategy.   What would happen to Space research if governments pulled out?   Would that be an issue?

I’m torn myself but my default feeling is government should pull out of all funding.
