Putting some numbers on life out there

I’m not exactly sure where they got the numbers from but researchers in Edinburgh has put some numbers on how many civilisations are out there.

Using some very flexible maths it seems that there are 361 intelligent civilisations in our Galaxy.  With the possibility of as many as 38,000.    Note that is our Galaxy alone.    There being another 7 trillion dwarf galaxies and 350 billion large galaxies in just the visible universe where estimates do not exist but must be of the same magnitude.

This calculation is based on the discovery of more planets with our sooper dooper telescopes and making the assumption that we are an average example of life.   Read the full article here.

Although I believe the laws of probability demand that there are other civilisations out there.  Civilisations based on life which may not even be recognised as such by us.   It is likely that there are even civilisations that are further advanced than us.    Some Galaxies being billions of years older than our own and that head start will make a difference.    How many civilisations have risen, prospered and are now extinct in this Galaxy alone never mind the Universe?

It makes the mind boggle and really makes you think about what is out there.
